Lift Kara De, a voluntary car lift initiative taken up by residents of Whispering Palms that was started with group of 7 people is now a community of more than 230 people. In a candid conversation with Sonali from Pioneernews24.com, Mr. Santosh Shetty reveals how his passion to make difference in society is growing by leaps and bounds.
What inspired you to take up “Lift Kara De” initiative?
With the ever expanding population in cities, and increase in the influx of people who come from others cities to find a living, it has amplified the number of cars on the road, creating a major traffic problem all over the city. To address these issues our group of seven people from ‘Whispering Palms’ society in the Lokhandwala Complex, Kandivili Mumbai, came together to help each other through a WhatsApp group. The WhatsApp group consists of members who want to offer their cars for voluntary pooling and those who want a lift. The person sending a message with a red dot becomes the lift seeker while the person sending with the blue dot becomes the lift giver. What started off as a small WhatsApp group of seven members, now is a 200+ member community that travels in and around Mumbai and now to Pune as well. This initiative which was started in August of 2015 is growing on daily basis and to accommodate more and more number of people we took a step further and decided to get an app.
Please elaborate more on this “Lift Kara De” app
This App is essentially designed to accommodate friends, families, different societies and make a Community group. It focuses on bringing the commuters of the neighbourhood together and makes the tedious travel a lot more enjoyable and at the same time, proves to be eco-friendly, fuel efficient. Lift Kara De App will help reduce the number of vehicles on the road and thereby increase social engagements.
What is your vision for “Lift Kara De” 5 years down the road?
“Lift Kara De” is a complete voluntary car lift initiative which we would want other societies and cities also to replicate. It has not only made travel easier and enjoyable but also inculcated the feeling of brotherhood and belongingness. Moreover, if other societies also adopt this model I am sure this would significantly reduce the number of vehicles on road thereby helping us to keep road congestion free and save fuel as well. It has helped people to increase their network. Lift Kara De has also been contributing in reduction of CO2 emission, which we pledge as part of Prime Minister NarendraModi’s environment initiative. As more and more people are becoming aware of it, we are expecting more and more participation from all nooks and corners of city. Appreciate if Governments and Corporate thru their CSR initiatives join us in our community building initative.I believe by end off 2021 we should be a community of more than million commuters.
